National Means Cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS)
The Centrally Sponsored Scheme “National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS)” was launched in May, 2008. It is implemented by the Department of School Education & Literacy under the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The objective of the scheme is to award scholarships to meritorious students of economically weaker sections to arrest their drop out at class VIII and encourage them to continue the study at secondary stage. Scholarship of Rs. 12000/- per annum (Rs.1000/- per month) per student is awarded to selected students every year for study in classes from IX to XII in State Government, Government aided and local body schools. There is quota of scholarships for different states/UTs. Students whose parental income from all sources is not more than Rs. 1,50,000/- are eligible to avail the scholarships. There is reservation as per State Government norms. The selection of students award of the scholarships is made through an examination conducted by the State Governments. Scholarships are disbursed by the State Bank of India directly into the bank accounts of students on quarterly basis.
The students studying in “Kendriya Vidalayas and “Jawahar Vavodaya Vidlayas” are not entitled to get scholarship under this scheme. Similarly, those students studying in Residential Schools run by the State Government Institutions, where facilities like boarding, lodging and education are provided and students studying in private schools are also not eligible for the scholarship under this scheme.

Important Conditions Regarding Starting & Continuing Of NMMS Scholarship
For receiving the scholarship the awardees should get clear promotion from class 8 to class 9th
The scholarship is payable at the secondary and higher secondary stage or equivalent classes of 9th to 12th for a maximum period of four years
Students can avail this scholarship for studies in India only
For getting this scholarship in class 10th and 12 the awardees are required to get clear promotion in class 9th to 10th and from class 11th to 12th in first attempt with at least 55% marks
Relaxation will be provided in SC and ST categories
The relaxation will be of 5%
This scheme will be reviewed after three years
The department will monitor the scheme at regular intervals with concerned stakeholder
For effective implementation and monitoring of this scheme a technical support group will be constituted
If any school or educational institution does not conduct an examination at the end of class 9th or 12th the scholarship for 2nd year will be continued on the submission of certificate to this effect from the head of the institution or school
For continuation of this scholarship the awardee is required to obtain at least 60% marks in class 10th
Disbursement Of NMMS Scholarship
If student is obtaining scholarship from state of Central Government then he or she will not be eligible to take benefit of this scheme
The scholarship awardee is required to open bank account in State Bank of India or any public sector bank or scheduled bank
The state government will upload the list of beneficiaries on the scholarship portal
This list will be scrutinized by the ministry and sanction of fund from the annual budget provision will be made
The amount of scholarship will be directly disbursed into the bank account of the beneficiary
The awardee is required to obtain at least 55% marks in class 9th and 11th and 60% marks in class 10th for continuation of scholarship
It is the responsibility of State Bank of India to ensure that the scholarship is provided to the beneficiary in one go after getting funds and list from the ministry
Other than that the State Bank of India will also instruct its branches to coordinate with state education department in connection with the payment of scholarship
